8 Minute Mile

Oh, those 3 words still drive so much anger in me. I can still smell the black track where I had to run this 8 minute mile.

When I was in high school, in order to even try out for the volleyball team (each year), you had to complete a mile in 8 minutes! I was quick at short distances and I did have volleyball skills, but what I didn't do well was running long distance, and to me, 4 times around the track was long!

Why bring this up now? I was in my Nia class the other day (another blog for another day) and I was thinking how hard it was on me. My mind quickly thought back to those summers when I was dreading going back to school and trying out for the volleyball team; I was always unsure if I could make the mile in 8 minutes. Every morning I would get up and "train" with my dad. When time came to try out, I always made the mile in 8 minutes, but just short of dying!

I never understood why we had to do this task, it never made any sense to me. I still don't understand why it mattered if I could run an 8 minute mile - I was a decent volleyball player and could add alot to the team with my sets and my serves.

Anyways, your thoughts welcomed. I would love to know what stupid things you had to do as a kid just to teach you a lesson. And maybe you are like me and still don't really understand what the lesson was supposed to teach!

Pictured is me and my best friends (Stacey and Catie) who played volleyball. The other part of our group was on the drill team. I had to put this picture of us in my car - man, I loved that car -- so many funny stories!

By the way, thank you for all of your emails and comments regarding Emme. It has been an inspiring week and I thank you for your words of encouragement!

My friend Stacey emailed me this:

From Stacey: Haha! That’s so funny that you wrote that. Just a few days ago James and I were jogging and he made me run sprints on the high school track. WORST MEMORIES EVER. I was just telling him and my friends at work about this! I don’t think I ever made it under 8 minutes by the way.

I never made that 8 minute mile, so kudos to you! :)

I remember my fastest at a Cross Country meet was 8:40 and that earned me 3rd place on the B-team. I definitely was not a long distance runner at all.

I can remember for volleyball we had to do the agility ropes (or whatever they are really called) outside just like the football players. One time I forgot to take my knee pads off or pull them up from my ankles so I tripped really bad. SO embarrassing as a junior high school girl...right by where all the football players practiced!
